Gratitude wins. Gratitude for being outside every day, in the air, the sun and the sea, for the intense time we had together. For growing as a couple and as damn good friends.

Out there on the sea, it was not always easy. Travelling is not a holiday. The constant watching of the weather, and the search for safe places to spend the night, cost strength and energy. And then there is the fact that everything takes longer. Yet that is precisely the real blessing.

Because having time is one thing. Taking time for the ordinary things is the true luxury.

Then you no longer need the permanent noise of endless headphones just to keep the stress level up and make sure the input never drops. Instead, I can simply listen to the sounds around me. The washing machine. The people. Some random beeping. It hardly matters.

When everyone else is moving at nearly the speed of light and we remain stationary on our Rocinante, time slows down on board. Doing the laundry takes a whole day.

Does that bother us? Not in the slightest. In the evening we lie in the fresh bunk, satisfied and exhausted. There is no better feeling. What is a small success here is, ashore, merely an annoying necessity.

And when we move on, we do so slowly, but steadily. That is how we arrive, sometimes more and sometimes less rested, in new places.

No matter how full it is in Palma, Porto, Barcelona or Marseille, we have our own floating home with us. In the evening we can withdraw and, with a healthy distance, drift there and watch the busyness — or the business of being busy — from afar.

But then, after almost eighteen months, everything suddenly moved very quickly after all.

As we might have said in the old days: the beautiful days of Aranjuez are probably over.

As much as I sometimes longed for the journey to end, especially when it became difficult or hard, I notice now that I did not really want to go back. What I wanted, much more, was to hold on to moments. And at the same time I longed for a little safety and stability.

On the one hand, I am looking forward to the luxury of a shower, unlimited water and a slightly larger galley. On the other, I think back to my favourite places and to our time together.

I can see the clear water off Port-Cros, the silence of floating on my back on Cabrera, or our last night at anchor beneath the wild cliffs of the Costa Brava.

Nobody can take any of that away from me. Never.

What we experienced will always remain our shared experience and our shared story. Even as the story of the two of us continues to be written together.

Are there any wishes left at all?

Perhaps one.

When everything begins moving at the speed of light again, to pause for a moment. To remain stationary and enjoy the everyday necessities.

Even — or especially — when all it means is doing a load of laundry.
